Lewis Chases World Record

Carl Lewis’ frustrating pursuit of a world record in the 100-meter dash will continue on the windy but fast track at Modesto College in today’s S&W; Modesto Invitational meet.

Lewis ran a 9.9-second race April 28 in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays, the fastest time in the world this year, but he did it with an aiding wind of 2.5 meters a second, just over the limit of 2.

The world record of 9.93 is held by Calvin Smith.

At the Mt. SAC meet, Lewis said he felt ready for a fast sprint time at Modesto but added: “I hope it’s not windy.”

Lewis knows what he’s talking about. The track at Modesto College generally produces fast times, but there is often a blustery wind that negates any records.

In the women’s 100, Valerie Brisco-Hooks will face Olympic silver medalist Alice Brown. Also running in that race will be Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey-Page, who ran a wind-aided 10.92 at Mt. SAC.
