Guerrillas Shoot Across Lebanon Border at Israelis

TEL AVIV —  Guerrillas launched a close-range attack on Israel from Lebanon today for the first time since the 1982 Israeli invasion, firing automatic weapons at an army ambulance, a military spokesman said.

The daylight attack at the frontier fence caused no casualties. It came less than a month before Israel was due to bring home its troops.

Israel has already spent millions of dollars fortifying the 75-mile-long fenced border and has threatened to retaliate strongly if it is attacked after the pullout.

The spokesman said guerrillas fired at the ambulance traveling on the Israeli side of the electronic fence near Kibbutz Manara, a collective farming settlement, and then escaped in a car.
