23 Named to 1985-86 County Grand Jury

Eight women and 15 men, including former Board of Education member Richard E. Ferraro, were chosen by lot Friday to serve on the 1985-86 Los Angeles County Grand Jury.

Drawn by County Clerk-Executive Officer Frank S. Zolin and announced by Superior Court Acting Presiding Judge John L. Cole, the grand jurors will begin their one-year term July 1. The court’s presiding judge, Thomas T. Johnson, will select the group’s foreman at that time.

Grand jurors act as watchdogs over county government and weigh evidence leading to possible indictments in a few felony criminal cases. They earn $25 a day for each day they work plus one-way mileage fees and free parking.

Seven of the 155 citizens who volunteered for the duty survived the two-step drawing to become grand jurors, and three others were chosen as alternates. All potential grand jurors, including volunteers, must be nominated for inclusion in the drawings by judges of the Superior Court.

Traditionally, retired people and homemakers dominate the grand jury because they are best able to arrange their schedules to accommodate the four- or five-day-per-week duty. Sixteen members of the new group are retired, but only one listed her occupation as homemaker.

The new grand jury members are:

Lurene M. Albert, retired, Los Angeles; Sara R. Batchelor, retired accountant, volunteer, Los Angeles; Lino Bonucci, retired, Pasadena; Dain D. Carr, retired engineer, Playa del Rey, and Sam Cordova, businessman, Sylmar.

Also, Ferraro, retired, Los Angeles; Paula A. Gale, homemaker, Palos Verdes Estates; Leo E. George, retired, Burbank; Daniel Golden, retired psychologist, Encino, and William O. Gutierrez, retired county employee, volunteer, Arcadia.

Also, David A. Johnson, retired banker, Los Angeles; Marilyn Johnson, interior designer, Los Angeles; Ruth C. Jordan, state employee, volunteer, Los Angeles; Herbert L. Kneeter, semi-retired, Los Angeles, and Ernestine Magdaleno, retired, volunteer, Covina.
