Reagan’s Tax Proposals

How gratifying it is to know that “30,000 families with incomes exceeding $200,000 a year pay less than 5% of their earnings in federal taxes.” (Times, June 7). Being in a considerably lower income bracket, we pay 17% of our gross yearly income in federal taxes and another 5% in state income taxes.

Adding insult to injury, our beloved President wants to give those “truly deserving” over-$200,000 earnings a 10.7% tax reduction while the “less privileged” middle-income people get only a 4% to 6% break--maybe.

Loss of state tax deductibility and the special deduction for husband and wife who both work will probably result in a tax increase for us.

Reagan seems to have a somewhat perverted view of “fairness” and “equity.”
