Japan’s Sugihara Wins Sudden-Death Playoff
SAPPORO, Japan — Veteran pro Teruo Sugihara beat fellow Japanese Kimpachi Yoshimura on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff and won the $160,000 Sapporo Tokyu golf tournament Sunday.
It was the 48th career victory for the 48-year-old Sugihara, who earned $28,800.
Yoshimura forced the playoff with an even-par 72 Sunday that left him tied at 280 with Sugihara, who went three-over par with a 75.
But Sugihara rolled in an eight-foot par putt on the first playoff hole while Yoshimura missed a three-foot putt for a bogey.
Australian Brian Jones and Haruo Yasuda shared third place at seven-under-par 281. Jones shot a 72 and Yasuda a 73 Sunday over the 6,989-yard, par-72 Sapporo Kokusai Country Club course.
David Ishii of the United States, who won last week’s Tohoku Classic, his first triumph in Japan, fired a 75 for 282 and tied for fifth.
