U.S. Probes Death of Hawaiian in Philippines
MANILA — The U.S. Embassy is looking into allegations that an American died in the southern Philippines after being beaten by troops, embassy spokesman Scott Sugden said Monday.
He said the father of the American, Cirilo Matas, who lives in Hawaii, told the embassy that his son died in a hospital last month as a result of beatings from Philippine marines in Liloy, 460 miles south of Manila.
The embassy said it has not verified the report of Matas’ death. The acting armed forces chief Fidel Ramos has ordered an investigation into the case, local military authorities said.
