Irvine : Aquatics Complex Will Reopen With Big Splash
After nearly a year in mothballs, Irvine’s Heritage Park Aquatics Complex, site of the water competition portion of the pentathlon during last year’s Summer Olympics, will reopen with a city-sponsored bash Saturday.
The three-pool complex was closed last October after corrosion in pool pipes forced $350,000 worth of repairs, said Dave Tungate, community services supervisor.
Accompanied by musicians and a Marine Corps honor guard, Irvine Mayor David Sills will lead the 9 a.m. opening ceremonies. After the ribbon cutting, members of the public may dine on a free continental breakfast at poolside with live harp music.
At 10:30 a.m., local Olympic hopefuls will demonstrate their talents. The pool will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Swimmers should bring towels and padlocks, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Heritage Park Aquatics Complex is next to Irvine High School at 4601 Walnut Ave.
