Gov. James R. Thompson proclaimed a proposed 1992 World’s Fair in Chicago “dead” on Thursday after Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan said he opposed spending any more state money on the exposition.

“The fair is dead,” Thompson said at a news conference. The governor said there is no chance the Illinois General Assembly would approve any funds for the fair without Madigan’s support.
