Volleyball Tourney Starts This Morning
The 31st annual Laguna Beach Open Volleyball Tournament begins at 8 this morning on the Main Street Beach. Competition concludes Sunday with the championship match, which is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
Though the double-elimination tournament is not part of the Professional Beach Volleyball tour, most of the top players on the tour will compete in the Laguna Beach Open, which is invitational in format. All 16 teams were invited because of their success in the past.
Current world champions Andy Fishburn and Jay Hanseth will play as the No. 4-seeded team. Former four-time UCLA All-American Singin Smith and partner Randy Stoklos are the tournament’s No. 1 seed.
Also participating will be 1983 world champions Tim Hovland and Mike Dodd. The pair is seeded third.
Total prize money is $8,000 with $3,500 going to the winning team.
