Abrush fire Thursday destroyed more than 600 hilly acres of Tapo Canyon north of Simi Valley, a Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The fire, which broke out about 1:45 p.m., monopolized 16 Ventura County engine companies, more than half the companies on duty at the time.

No injuries were reported, spokeswoman Annie Jagerson said, and investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

Jagerson said the fire was near the junction of Tapo Canyon Road and Bennett Road, about 1.5 miles north of the Simi Valley city limits.

A Ventura County helicopter, two air tankers from the California Division of Forestry, a U.S. Forest Service helicopter and two teams of Los Angeles County firefighters assisted in controlling the fire, she said.

Jagerson said fire crews from Fillmore and Santa Paula handled emergency calls elsewhere in Ventura County while the blaze was being fought. It was controlled at 6:30 p.m., Jagerson said.

She said that the fire was just behind the area that was used to film the television series “Little House on the Prairie,” but that the film site was not damaged.
