The National Education Assn., holding its annual convention in Washington, said a new Gallup Poll shows the public is willing to raise teachers’ salaries, even if that means higher taxes. But the same poll found broad support for the teacher competency tests the union is battling. The Gallup Poll, commissioned by the teachers’ union, found that 57% of those surveyed believed their local schools were having a hard time attracting good teachers. Most pointed to low pay as the root of the problem.
