Fox Wins Second Consecutive Sport Pistol Championship : From

Olympic silver medalist Ruby Fox won her second consecutive national championship in women’s sport pistol competition Thursday at the 25th U.S. International Shooting Championships in Chino.

Don Nygord of La Crescenta, won his third national championship this year by capturing the centerfire pistol event Thursday.

“I actually shot better this year than I did last year, but the feeling is different. It’s almost ho-hum. It’s over,” said Fox, of Parker, Ariz.

Fox shot 1,737 of a possible 1,800 over three days to win the event. Judith Kemp of Anaheim, was second with 1,725, while Gail Liberty of San Antonio, Tex., was third with 1,718.

Nygord shot 1,760 of 1,800 in the centerfire pistol competition.

“I don’t practice this event hardly at all,” Nygord said. “That’s because this is not an Olympic event.”

Allyn Johnson of Fremont, Calif., was second with a 1,753, and Darrius Young of Winterburn, Alberta, was third with 1,749.

In the international skeet competition, Dan Carlisle of Conroe, Tex., leads the men after four days of shooting, while his wife Terry is currently tied for the women’s lead.

Dan Carlisle, an Olympic bronze medalist, won the national title in international trapshooting last week and has broken 293 of 300 targets thrown so far in the skeet. Richard Aitken of Phoenix, Ariz., is in second with a 292, while Joe Dickson of Fort Benning, Ga., is third at 291.

In women’s skeet, Terry Carlisle is tied at 277 with Ellen Dryke of Sequim, Wash. Eva Funes of Seattle, is in second with 269, and Connie Schiller of College Station, Tex., is third at 263.

More than 600 shooters will have competed in 16 championship events at the Prado Tiro range, and the U.S. Shooting Team will be chosen by Saturday, the final day of competition.
