Area Roundup : U.S. Olympic Team Handball Players Return to Titan Gym
Several members of the 1984 U.S. Olympic men’s team handball squad will participate in an exhibition match against Japan at 7 p.m. Sunday at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Gym.
Olympic team handball competition was staged at Titan Gym, and the men’s team defeated Japan, 24-16, for its only victory. The USA Select Team competing on Sunday night is composed of former Olympians and current national team members.
Among the Olympians scheduled to compete are Rod Oshita, Michael Lenard, Joe Story, Bob Djokovich, Tom Schneeberger and Steve Goss. Oshita, Lenard and Story recently competed in the 1985 World Championships in Oslo, Norway.
Coaching the team will be Mike Cavanaugh, the 1980 men’s Olympic coach who served as the event director for the 1984 Games. The Japanese team will feature four former Olympians.
The match serves as a final tuneup before the National Sports Festival begins July 23. Tickets will be available at the door and an honorary banquet hosted by Cal State Fullerton will follow the match.
The second session of the UC Irvine Baseball Camp begins Monday at UC Irvine.
California Angels Bob Boone, Doug DeCinces, Ron Romanick and Ruppert Jones are expected to appear at the camp, run by UCI Coach Mike Gerakos.

Coach John Mayberry’s Orange County All-Star Basketball Camp, July 8-12 at Kennedy High School will feature National Basketball Assn. stars Bill Walton of the Los Angeles Clippers and Kiki Vandeweghe of the Portland Trail Blazers.
The camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, has a ratio of one coach to every five campers and costs $145 for a full week, which includes a camp T-shirt, a basketball and a pair of athletic shoes. Open to boys and girls from ages 8-18, the camp is designed for athletes to compete with others of similar age and ability.

Thirty teen-aged sailors representing 10 yacht clubs will vie for the Governor’s Cup in four days of match racing off Newport Beach July 11-14.
With three members to a crew, the sailors will compete in new Holder 20s, single hull sloops, that will race a triangular course of about five miles near the Santa Ana River jetty.
The Balboa Yacht Club will operate the match races as a round-robin tournament. Patrick Williams of BYC is chairman of the event.
Some of Orange County’s top prep basketball players, including 6-foot 10-inch center Kevin Walker of Brea-Olinda and 6-7 forward Bob Erbst of Katella, will participate in a benefit game at 7:30 p.m. on July 14 at Valencia High.
The game matches the Pro Stars, led by Erbst, Ricky Butler of Ocean View, Robbie Burrer of Troy and Jim Sammon of El Dorado, against the Orange County All-Stars, featuring Walker, Bryant Walton of Saddleback, Alonzo Jamison of Santa Ana Valley and Jeff Fryer of Corona del Mar.
Proceeds from the game will help defray the cost of sending a traveling county all-star team to the Las Vegas summer tournament July 22-26. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for students.
Foursomes and individual players are invited to register for a Yorba Linda golf tournament to benefit muscular dystrophy. The tournament, scheduled for July 15 at the Yorba Linda Country Club, will offer 22 trophies, a putting contest, poolside activities, a number of prizes--including a new car--and a post-tournament barbecue. The 34th annual Shrine All-Star football game on July 27 at East Los Angeles College will feature eight players who graduated from Orange County high schools in June.
The game, which has raised more than $2 million for the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Los Angeles, is an annual showcase of graduating high school football talent in the area.
The Orange County players are Dan Owens of La Habra, Derrick Gachett and Don Miller of Esperanza, Chuck Kunsaitis of El Toro, Mike Beech of Newport Harbor, Tom Holler of La Quinta, Ken Felix of Capistrano Valley, and Randy Sheets of Western.

Some of Orange County’s top prep basketball coaches will help staff the Rose Drive Friends Basketball Camp July 29-Aug. 2 and Aug. 5-9 at Rose Drive Friends Church in Yorba Linda.
Among the coaches scheduled to staff the camp are Steve White (Sunny Hills), Mike Williams (Troy), George Fairchild (La Habra), Randy Forgette (Fullerton), Ed Graham (Orange), Bill Cuccia (Whittier Christian) and Gene Lloyd (Brea-Olinda).
The first session is open to boys in grades 4-8, and the second session is open to boys in grades 8-12. The cost of the camp is $100.

Newport Beach sisters Nancy and Cathy Mockett will compete in the women’s U.S. Open golf tournament, which starts next weekend in New Jersey. Nancy is a professional, Cathy is an amateur. . . . Boston’s Sean Mannion, the World Boxing Council’s 14th-ranked super welterweight, will fight Bert Lee of Anaheim as part of the Irvine Marriott’s boxing card July 22. Lee, ranked as California’s top super welterweight, has a 28-4-4 record. . . . The annual Anaheim Grass Over-The-Line Tournament will be on July 20 at Magnolia High School.
