Population in Los Angeles rose 2.5% from July 1, 1982, to July 1, 1984, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated. The estimate, based on birth and death rates and federal tax data, shows that the city’s population increased from 3,022,247 in 1982 to 3,096,721 in 1984. Los Angeles has the second-highest population of any U.S. city after New York, which had an estimated 7,164,742 residents as of July 1, 1984. Chicago ranked third with an estimated 2,992,472 residents.
