Former Ohio State running back Tim Spencer, who played for the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League last season, has agreed to a series of one-year contracts with the San Diego Chargers.

Spencer, drafted by the Chicago Blitz, was the second player taken in the 1983 United States Football League draft. Spencer was traded to the Arizona Wranglers and then, after he was left unprotected when the Arizona and Oklahoma franchises merged, he was picked up by Memphis.

“I moved around so much and there was so much uncertainty,” Spencer said. “I thought I had good seasons and they could have showed me a little more respect.”

Spencer is the second defecting USFL player picked up by the Chargers this summer. Three weeks ago, San Diego reached agreement with wide receiver Trumaine Johnson, a top draft pick of the Chargers two years ago.

The Chargers drafted the 6-1, 212-pound Spencer in 1983, but not until the 11th round because he already was under contract to the USFL. Spencer is the fourth-leading rusher in Big Ten history.
