At least 250,000 people gathered to pay homage to Harchand Singh Longowal, the moderate Sikh leader who was assassinated Aug. 20, presumably by Sikh militants. India’s Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, in a message read at a prayer ceremony at Longowal’s namesake village, “appealed to the people to carry forward the message and work of Longowal for the progress and prosperity of Punjab.”
