City officials are studying a proposal to build a multimillion-dollar community center, which would be the first facility of its kind in La Mirada.

A report submitted to the City Council calls for construction of an 18,000-square-foot facility that could include a gymnasium, meeting rooms, a kitchen and an activities area. Estimated cost of the center would run between $1.5 million and $2 million, said Tom Robinson, the city’s community revitalization manager. Annual maintenance costs would be about $150,000, he said.

Options to finance the project include the formation of a voter-approved assessment district, private donations, community redevelopment money or other sources.

According to the city report, La Mirada Regional Park is the best site for a community center. Two other locations, the former Benton School site at Santa Gertrudes Avenue and Branch Road and Behringer Park on Alicante Road, were also mentioned in the report.

The council is expected to consider the issue again in September.
