Robert Girardin, for 22 years the director of the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, died of cancer Aug. 20 at Memorial Medical Center of Long Beach.
Girardin, who was 57, helped organized the city’s Azalea Festival. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Shirley; daughters, Kathy and Debbie; a son, David, and three grandsons. A graduate of Michigan State University, Girardin was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Field Service, South Gate Booster Club and the Boy Scouts.
