Coast Guard Says Mayday Call a Hoax
A report of a plane ditching in the Pacific Ocean between John Wayne Airport and Catalina Island was a hoax, Coast Guard officials said Friday.
Spokesmen at the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Long Beach said U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships and aircraft had searched unsuccessfully Thursday for a downed aircraft after receiving a radio Mayday call purportedly from a pilot who reported he was ditching in the water.
