San Diegan Wins Portland Bike Race
PORTLAND, Ore. — Jeff Pierce of San Diego crossed the finish line in one hour, 10 minutes and 30 seconds to win the men’s 35-mile pro-am competition in the Wheat Thins Mayor’s Cup bicycle race series on Sunday.
About 22,000 people looked on from downtown street corners as Pierce led the pack in the five-block course. He took home $1,090 for his efforts.
The current series leader, Tom Schuler, of Downers Grove, Ill., finished ninth, but holds a commanding lead going into the series final in Boston on Sept. 29. His total winnings for the series stand at $8,760.
Sunday’s race was the 18th in the 19-race series.
In the women’s 15-mile pro-am, Betsy Davis of Lavalette, N.J., pedaled to victory in a time of 15:00.42.
