Cycling Championship Coming to U.S.
MAROSTICA, Italy — Plans for the 1986 World Cycling Championships, the first edition in nearly 60 years of road racing to be held in the United States, were unveiled in a 12th century castle here.
Amidst explosions of firecrackers, fired from the ancient walls of Marostica, in northereast Italy, James Warsinske, general manager of the U.S. Organizing Committee said that a $2 million budget has been approved for staging track and road race events in Colorado Springs. Colo., from Aug. 27 to Sept. 7, 1986.
Warsinske, a former member of the organizing committee of the Los Angeles Olympics, said he is confident of making a profit out of the cycling championships “as there is a lot of expectation for the competition, and Americans are increasingly crazy about bikes.”
“However, profit, if any, would be invested for new races and new cycling enterprise in the U.S.,” the general manager said.
