Air Crash Survivors Hike, Swim River, Hitchhike to Hospital
GRANGEVILLE, Idaho — A man and a woman suffered broken bones in a north Idaho plane crash that killed three relatives but walked three miles and swam a river, then hitchhiked to a Montana hospital, officials said today.
Shuree Edwards, 20, of Spokane, Wash., and John Nomoj, 22, of Clarkston, Wash., left behind three passengers who died after their Cessna Cardinal 177 crashed near Lolo Pass on the Idaho-Montana border Sunday night.
Edwards’ mother, stepfather, and stepbrother--all Idaho residents whose names were not available--died in the accident.
The survivors, who hiked three miles and swam the Lochsa River, hitchhiked into Missoula, arriving at a hospital about 5 p.m. Monday. Edwards had a broken hand and a chest injury and Nomoj suffered a broken right leg and facial cuts.
The flight took off from Potlatch about 2:30 p.m. Sunday on a sightseeing expedition over the Lochsa River.
