Tennis Roundup : Wilander Beats Pecci; Noah Upset
Top-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden moved into the third round of the $275,000 Godo tournament with a victory over Victor Pecci Wednesday, but No. 2 Yannick Noah and two other seeded players were eliminated.
Wilander, the French Open champion Sweden, defeated Pecci, of Paraguay, 6-4, 6-1.
Noah, of France, was a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 victim of Argentina’s Roberto Arguello, while fourth-seeded Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia also was eliminated. Kent Carlsson of Sweden beat, Smid 6-3, 6-1.
No. 9 Jose-Luis Clerc of Argentina, who had a sore throat, defaulted to Uruguayan Diego Perez.
Unseeded Anne White upset third-seeded Zina Garrison 6-2, 6-2, in the second round of the $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at New Orleans.
Fourth-seeded Kathy Rinaldi withdrew with a stomach virus while trailing unseeded Lisa Bonder, 6-7, 3-4.
Seventh-seeded Peanut Louie squeezed by unseeded Lori McNeil, 6-2, 7-6, and fifth-seeded Wendy Turnbull beat unseeded Wendy White, 6-4, 6-1.
Brad Gilbert and Bob Green reached the quarterfinals of the $277,000 Transamerica tournament at San Francisco.
Gilbert neeed only about an hour to overpower Peter Fleming, 6-2, 6-2, while Bob Green outlasted Mark Dickson, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, in three hours.
