South Gate Pupil Move Unsettling
Regarding Ken Kent’s viewpoint of South Gate’s students being forced to attend Jordan High School in Watts (Southeast/Long Beach sections, Sept. 14-15): Kent stated that for 30 years, in certain Downey areas, parents must send their children to other school districts that border Downey and that they accepted this situation without any protest.
I would like to remind Kent that cities that border Downey don’t have the reputation nor the famous Watts riot (of the area) that borders South Gate.
Kent also states that for decades South Gate High had sufficient classroom space for all our students. I would like to remind Kent that for decades the Los Angeles Board of Education has refused to build a new high school in the Southeast area of Bell, Cudahy, Maywood, Huntington Park or South Gate. Yet the Los Angeles district gave the OK to build a new high school (Locke High) to ease overcrowding at Fremont and Jordan highs.
What the L.A. school district has accomplished by changing South Gate’s boundary is to bring forced busing to the students of South Gate.
