For the fourth straight week, Penn State was victorious without being overpowering.

Dave Clark raced 76 yards to set up a touchdown early in the second quarter, and Steve Smith rambled 63 yards for a fourth-quarter score, pacing the ninth-ranked Nittany Lions to a 17-10 victory over Rutgers Saturday at Giants Stadium.

Kevin Woods scored from four yards out after Clark’s long run and Massimo Manca added a 53-yard field goal to account for the winning margin, which equals Penn State’s largest of the season. The Nittany Lions beat East Carolina, 17-10, last week.

“We have not improved as a football team since the week before we played Maryland (in the season opener),” Penn State Coach Joe Paterno said. “We’re not ever going to improve either until we get healthy a few weeks in a row.”

Penn State is banged up on offense, the most serious injury being to running back D.J. Dozier, who did not play. Still, Penn State rushed for 260 yards and got the two big runs from Smith and Clark.

“I always say a couple of plays make the difference in a game and today that’s what obviously happened,” Rutgers Coach Dick Anderson said.

Rutgers has lost two straight after opening its season with a tie against Florida.

The Nittany Lions are 13-1 against Rutgers, their only loss coming in their first meeting in 1918.
