Rock singer Bruce Springsteen, whose yearlong concert tour ended Wednesday in Los Angeles, has donated $25,000 to a food program for senior citizens, low-income or unemployed people.

The program, established by George Cole, president of United Steelworkers Union Local 1845 three years ago, distributes food to 9,000 to 10,000 families each month and provides a hot lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Huntington Park Methodist Church and the Holy Cross Catholic Church in South-Central Los Angeles.

Springsteen, whose songs often address working class issues, last year donated $10,000 to the food program, Cole said, demonstrating his “concern for working people and the vanishing American dream.” This year’s donation, which will be used to buy more food, Cole said, “is great. It’s a Godsend.”
