Raiders Activate Former CLC Quarterback

Quarterback Russ Jensen has been activated by the Los Angeles Raiders, the National Football League team announced Thursday.

Jensen, a free agent from Cal Lutheran who was a backup quarterback for the Los Angeles Express of the United States Football League briefly last spring, has been on the Raiders’ injured reserve list since summer training camp, when he broke his right thumb.

The 6-2, 200-pound athlete was cut by the Express last spring before being signed by the Raiders. He had to clear waivers to be activated since he was placed on the injured reserve list before the season.

The Raiders had two open spots on their roster: wide receiver-kick returner Cle Montgomery was placed on the injured reserve list after undergoing knee surgery Tuesday and defensive lineman Dave Stalls has been released. Montgomery is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

Jensen becomes the third quarterback on the Los Angeles roster. The others are Marc Wilson and rookie Rusty Hilger.

Wilson is the first-stringer, but Hilger might start against Kansas City on Sunday because Wilson sprained his right ankle against New England last Sunday. Wilson had replaced Jim Plunkett on Sept. 22 because Plunkett suffered a dislocated left shoulder that will sideline him for at least two months.

Pierce Running Back Named Player of the Week

Pierce tailback Tyrone Beaulieu was named Southern California Conference Player of the Week for his performance against Moorpark last Saturday.

The sophomore rushed for 174 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown in the Brahmas’ 31-28 victory. In his first three games of the season, Beaulieu had only 89 yards rushing.

Game Cancelled for Lack of Opponent

Saturday’s scheduled 8 p.m. football game between the visiting Cal Lutheran College junior varsity and Valley College has been cancelled. Reason: Cal Lutheran has no junior varsity team.
