Dow Jones & Co. said its third-quarter profit edged up 1.5% over the like 1984 period on a 7.4% revenue gain. The company, which owns the Wall Street Journal and other publications, said its net income for the three months ended Sept. 30 came to $26.95 million. Excluding dilution from its purchase this summer of 32% of Telerate Inc., a market-data service, its third-quarter profit gain was 7.9%. Wall Street Journal advertising linage in the third quarter was off 5.5%, with classified ads showing the sharpest decline, Dow Jones said.
