FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Valley First in Mt. SAC Invitational

The Valley College womens’ cross country team continued its winning ways Friday with a first-place finish in the Mt. SAC Invitational.

The Monarchs had 57 points to outdistance second-place American River College (Sacramento), which had 80. West Valley and Mt. SAC both had 85, but West Valley earned third place on the basis of its first four runners. Foothill was fifth with 149.

Valley is 5-0 in dual meets and has won two invitationals. In Friday’s invitationals, two Monarchs broke the course record of 17:57 and the invitational record of 18:02. Valley’s Kim Stewart did it with a 17:26.6 and Gretchen Lohr, who finished second, had a 17:29.7.

Brenda Payton of American River was third, Valley’s Sandra Martinez was fourth and West Valley’s Roxanne Bier fifth.

Other Valley participants include: (21st) Donna DiMaggio; (29) Maureen Doderlein; (34) Donna Jackson and (54) Kathy Smith.

Jim Zimmer finished eight seconds ahead of teammate Chris Pressman as Simi Valley High placed four of the top six runners and ran away with the Ventura County cross-country championship Friday at Moorpark College.

Zimmer’s time on the three-mile course was 15:34.

Simi Valley scored 27 points to runner-up Rio Mesa’s 107. Thousand Oaks was third, followed by Westlake and Newbury Park.

A soccer game between Cal State Northridge and Cal Poly Pomona, originally scheduled for 3 p.m. today in Northridge, has been moved to 2 p.m. at Pomona.

The Matadors are coming off their first conference loss, a 1-0 upset to Chapman College. It was to be CSUN’s first home game after playing five games away. After today’s game and a Wednesday match against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Matadors finish the regular season schedule at North Campus Stadium.
