Haight, Morton Lead Aztecs to Volleyball Win
The San Diego State women’s volleyball team opened the Longhorn Invitational Tournament in impressive fashion Thursday night, beating Texas Tech, 15-7, 15-1, 15-12, in Lubbock, Texas.
Two freshmen led the No. 15 Aztecs, who improved to 19-11. Outside hitter Shelley Haight had a team-high 11 kills and middle-blocker Kris Morton added nine.
After dominating the first two games, SDSU trailed Texas Tech, 12-6, in the third. Sparked by the serving of Renee Pankopf and Liz Ugaitafa, the Aztecs scored the next nine points, and Texas Tech fell to 15-4.
“This was one of our better matches,” Aztec Coach Rudy Suwara said. “I think we might be gelling.”
SDSU returns to tournament action tonight, when it faces Tennessee in Austin. The tournament ends Saturday, when the Aztecs face Texas in Austin.
