Jet Engine Catches Fire; 200 Aboard Evacuated Safely
GRAPEVINE, Tex. — A Delta Air Lines jumbo jetliner with more than 200 people aboard aborted its takeoff Friday night after an engine caught fire, and those aboard were evacuated by emergency slides, an official said.
No injuries were reported in the incident involving the three-engine Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, which was to fly to San Francisco as Flight 43, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Gerrie Cook.
When the tailpipe fire broke out, the pilot immediately stopped the plane and ordered the evacuation, Cook said. The airport was closed for five minutes while firefighters extinguished the flames, she said.
