A Skid Row resident was shot in the stomach by a Los Angeles police motorcycle officer after the man allegedly threatened the officer with a 23-inch machete. Raymond Martinez, 32, was in satisfactory condition in the jail ward at County-USC Medical Center, where he was booked on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Los Angeles Police Sgt. Sid Nuckles said Martinez was among a group of men chasing Alfonso Renteria, 26, near 5th and Towne streets. One man, brandishing a pitchfork, was arrested. Martinez was shot by Officer Robert Crupi, 32, after he tried to slash Renteria with the machete, then tried to throw the weapon at the officer, Nuckles said. Renteria was also arrested on suspicion of burglary involving an earlier attempt at car theft which may have precipitated the chase and attack.
