Servite Misses Shutout but That’s All in 47-13 Victory

Servite High School may be Orange County’s best defensive team this season, but the Friars have yet to shut out any of their 1985 opponents.

It appeared that Servite would have its first shutout Saturday night, but the Friars built such a huge lead (47 points) over Bishop Montgomery that Friar Coach Leo Hand pulled his starters and let his second string play the entire fourth period.

Bishop Montgomery scored 13 off that unit, but that hardly eased the severity of the loss. Servite dominated the Knights during a 47-13 Angelus League victory before 2,500 fans at Gahr High School.

The win improves the Friars to 2-0 in league play and 7-0 overall. Servite, ranked No. 1 in Orange County and tied with Bishop Amat for first place in the Angelus League, meets St. Paul (1-1) next week.

Saturday, the Friars rolled up 427 total yards on offense while limiting the Knights to 167.

Servite quarterback Tim Rosenkranz, the county’s second-rated passer, turned in his usual solid performance, completing 11 of 18 passes for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns.

But the Friars, who have been relying mostly on the pass lately, received a surprisingly strong rushing game from Derek Noggle, who ran for 152 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown. Sal Sirna also scored on runs of 24 and 6 yards and caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Rosenkranz.

The Friars had the game virtually won by halftime when they built a 21-0 lead on their last play of the second period.

Rosenkranz faded back from the Knight 39-yard line with five seconds left and lofted a long pass to Jeff Fieldhouse, who made an outstanding catch in the end zone between Bishop Montgomery defenders Dan Berthel, Terence Campbell and Robert Gonzales.

It took Servite 3:49 to drive 97 yards, but the Friars were aided by two, 15-yard personal foul penalties by the Knights. Rosenkranz also completed a 35-yard pass to Fieldhouse that gave Servite a first down at the Bishop Montgomery 31.

On the night, Fieldhouse caught 4 passes for 97 yards. He has been averaging more than 24 yards per reception this season.

Servite broke the game open with 26 points in the third quarter. Rosenkranz passed to Fieldhouse for one score (3 yards), and to Sirna for another (28 yards), while Noggle and Sirna scored on touchdown runs of 32 yards and 6 yards, respectively.

The Knights appeared to be off to an excellent start when Kurt Bohney took a handoff on the opening kickoff and ran the reverse 85 yards for an apparent touchdown. But the score was nullified by a clipping penalty.

Three incomplete passes by Bishop Montgomery quarterback Vince Calvillo forced a punt by Pat McLaughlin, who shanked a 15-yarder off to the right.

The Friars took over on the Knight 35-yard line, from where Rosenkranz kept for a 27-yard run and an 8-yard touchdown run with 10:42 remaining in the first quarter.

On its next possession, Servite drove 80 yards in 10 plays, Sirna taking an inside handoff and running 24 yards for a touchdown with three seconds left in the quarter. Noggle had runs of 14 and 15 yards and caught an 8-yard pass from Rosenkranz on the drive, while Corey Wentz kicked his second of five extra points in game.

Servite knocked Bishop Montgomery’s starting quarterback, Vince Calvillo, out of the game in the second quarter and limited his replacement, Todd Viter, to 81 yards passing on 9 of 23 attempts. The Knights dropped to 0-2 in league and 4-3 overall.
