The Dow Jones industrial average, the widely watched measure of activity on the New York Stock Exchange, is being changed to include Philip Morris Cos. and McDonald’s Corp., Dow Jones & Co. said today.

The two companies will replace General Foods Corp., which is being acquired by Philip Morris, and American Brands Inc. Both are on the current list of 30 industrials. Dow Jones said American Brands, the fourth-largest U.S. cigarette maker, was being dropped to prevent the stock market barometer from becoming too heavily weighted with tobacco issues.
