110 Viet Refugees on Sailboat Rescued
MANILA — Crewmen aboard a West German cargo ship plucked 110 Vietnamese “boat people” from a sailboat in danger of sinking in the South China Sea and ferried them to the Philippines, officials here said Tuesday.
One refugee said that 10 passing ships had ignored their calls for help.
Capt. Manfred Shander of the 12,264-ton, West German-registered cargo vessel Anja Leonhardt was en route to Kaoshiung, Taiwan, last Thursday, when his Philippine crew found the 40-foot-long wooden sampan 240 miles south of Vietnam. The refugees had taken to sea four days earlier.
