NHL Roundup : Gretzky Gets a Hat Trick as Oilers Rebound, 7-1

After they had been shut out by a goaltender--Daren Puppa of the Buffalo Sabres--making his NHL debut Friday night, it figured the Edmonton Oilers would take it out on their next opponent.

The next opponent was the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs and they never had a chance Sunday night at Edmonton. With Wayne Gretzky scoring a hat trick before the second period was over, the Oilers trounced the Leafs, 7-1.

Gretzky completed his 35th career hat trick at 15:47 of the second period to give the Oilers a commanding 4-1 lead. The Oilers are 9-2-0 this season and Gretzky, perennial scoring leader, has 27 points in 11 games.

This was the 21st game Gretzky has played against the Maple Leafs and he has scored at least one goal in every one of them.

The Leafs record dropped to 1-10, the worst in the league.

The Oilers’ Grant Fuhr had to leave in the middle of the second period when he injured his arm. He was replaced in goal by Andy Moog.

The only goal the Leafs scored came just before Fuhr hurt his arm. He accidentally deflected the puck into the net himself on a shot by Miroslav Frycer at 8:05 of the second period.

St. Louis 4, Winnipeg 3--Doug Gilmour scored a goal with just 65 seconds left in overtime at Winnipeg to continue the Blues’ string of success against the Jets.

The Blues are unbeaten in their last four games (2-0-2) against the Jets.

Winnipeg, trailing 3-0, scored three goals in the second period to tie the game.

Except for the brief flurry in the second period by the Jets, rookie goalie Darrell May handled himself well. The Jets fired 35 shots at him. He stopped nine shots in the scoreless third period and three more in overtime before the Blues won it.
