Pomona : Growth Study Funded

Funding for a study of population trends in the city has been approved by the board of the Pomona Unified School District as the first step in obtaining state money for the construction of new schools.

The board last week approved $13,500 for Criterion Inc. of San Diego to conduct the study. The study, which will help determine when and where new schools will be needed, will be based on a computerized list of several years’ worth of address changes for students currently enrolled, trends in housing construction and home sales, and county population projections.

Jerry Schlesinger, staff vice president of Criterion, said the study should be completed in April, with preliminary conclusions ready by the end of the year.

Steven Cary, purchasing director for the district, said the state Department of Education requires a demographic study before funding for new school construction can be approved.
