2 Arrested After Wrong-Way Chase on 2 Freeways
Two suspected car thieves were captured early today after leading police on a 12-mile, high-speed chase down the wrong side of two freeways, the California Highway Patrol said.
The chase began when Compton police officers allegedly saw the pair trying to buy drugs. The CHP and sheriff’s deputies took over pursuit when they headed north on the southbound side of the San Diego Freeway at Crenshaw Boulevard.
Driving with their lights off at speeds of nearly 100 m.p.h., the suspects narrowly avoided a collision with oncoming traffic before they abandoned the stolen Buick on the Marina Freeway in Westchester, where they were captured.
The suspects, identified as Keith Campbell, 20, and Latonia Dillard, 21, both of Compton, were booked on suspicion of auto theft and evading arrest.
