Acknowledging that tensions could flare into violence again, leaders of a union striking two frozen food plants in Watsonville urged other workers and lawmakers to support their fight against what they called “union-busting” tactics. Sergio Lopez, a business agent for Teamsters Local 912, said leaders will do their best to prevent violence by workers, but said that some of the union members--idled 10 weeks by the strike--are becoming desperate. Eighteen union members were arrested in Gilroy after striking workers attacked company vehicles carrying strikebreakers, injuring five people, authorities said.
