Hotel Spying : No ‘Sex Cops’ for N.Y.: Koch
NEW YORK — Mayor Edward Koch today contradicted the state health commissioner and ruled out using city inspectors as “sex cops” to investigate sexual activities in hotel rooms in an effort to stop the spread of AIDS.
In Tokyo, where he is vacationing, the mayor rejected a call by state Health Commissioner David Axelrod to extend the city’s crackdown on high-risk sexual practices.
The city has been enforcing emergency regulations banning anal and oral sex on the premises of bathhouses and gay clubs, and one club has been closed. Axelrod said officials could enter hotel rooms under the regulations.
The mayor said, “I don’t believe any responsible person would extend that proposal to hotel rooms and private homes.
“We will not send in sex police to hotels to ascertain the nature of sex practices between consenting adults.”
