FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Behind Korn and Haug, Birmingham Wins Mid-Valley Cross-Country Title
Birmingham High’s Jeff Korn and Sven Haug tied for first place Thursday, leading the Braves to an 18-42 win over Van Nuys and the Mid-Valley League cross-country championship.
Korn and Haug completed the three-mile course at Pierce College in 16:01 to set the tempo for for a near sweep.
Van Nuys’ Bruce Sorkin finished third in 16:26. Following Sorkin was Birmingham’s Bill Gastelum in 16:32. Running in fifth place was Korn’s twin brother, Rick, with a time of 16:37.
Rod Braunthal ran a personal best of 16:32 to lead the Taft cross-country team to the West Valley League title in a 17-46 defeat of El Camino Real. The meet was held at Pierce College.
Taft sophomore Marlin Rodriguez finished second at 16:41.
El Camino Real’s Sean Goldberg had a hat trick in beating the Canoga Park soccer team, 4-2. Darren Freitag assisted Goldberg on each of the three goals.
The Conquistadors are 5-2-1 in the West Valley League.
