UNLIKELY TRIBUTE
In order to get the full fun out of “The Jewel of the Nile,” Michael Douglas’ dad will have to attend the screening with an Arab interpreter.
Said “Jewel” super-villain Spiros Focas, who plays a power-hungry Middle Eastern potentate: “Near the end of the film, I make a speech in Arabic in which I am declaring war. The speech is actually made up of all the titles of Kirk Douglas’ films, like ‘Spartacus’ and ‘Lust for Life.’ ”
“Jewel” writers Mark Rosenthal and Lawrence Konner came up with the idea of an homage to their boss’ dad.
How did “Jewel” producer/star Douglas respond? “Michael went mad laughing,” Focas reports. “But it seems a shame no one else will get the joke. They’re not putting subtitles on the speech.”
