Golf Roundup : Canadians Win the World Cup Tourney; Player Wins in His First Seniors Outing
Canadians Dan Halldorson and Dave Barr, given breathing room by an American collapse, cruised to an easy, front-running, four-stroke victory Sunday in the 32nd World Cup golf tournament at La Quinta.
Halldorson, who teamed with Jim Nelford to win the 1980 World Cup for Canada, shot a closing 74.
That gave the Canadians a 146 total for the day and a 559 team total, 17 under par on the Mountain course at the La Quinta Hotel.
The United States, represented by Tom Kite and Lanny Wadkins, made it easy for the Canadians on this cool, overcast and occasionally drizzly day.
The Americans, five shots back in second place going into the final round, failed to mount anything resembling a challenge. In fact, they fell back, with Wadkins struggling to a 73 and Kite taking the same despite an eagle-2 on the 11th hole.
That gave them a 564 team total and dropped them back to third, one stroke behind England.
Gary Player, playing in and winning his first seniors tournament, pulled away from the field with a four-under-par 68 to complete a record-tying 54-hole score of 11-under 205 in the $200,000 Quadel seniors tournament at Boca Raton, Fla.
Player trailed by seven strokes after shooting a 73 in the first round Friday. He cut three strokes from the deficit with a 64 Saturday and then surged to overtake Ken Still on the final round while Still slipped to a 75 over the 6,750-yard Boca Grove Plantation course.
