Inland Conference : Fake Punt Helps as Paraclete Overpowers Orange Lutheran
Paraclete High School powered and faked its way to a 14-6 victory over Orange Lutheran Friday night in a Southern Section Inland Conference quarterfinal playoff game in Glover Stadium in front of 500.
Orange Lutheran led briefly in the first quarter after the Lancers recovered a fumble by Paraclete’s Brian Johnson on the Spirits’ 23. Four plays later, running back Matt Zaun scored the game’s first touchdown.
Orange Lutheran’s extra-point attempt was wide and the Lancers’ led 6-0.
Later in the first quarter, Paraclete drove from its 22 to the Lancers’ 44. Matt Stevens then broke several tackles on a 39-yard run to the Orange Lutheran five-yard line.
Running back Brian Baker scored on the next play. The conversion was good and the Spirits held a 7-6 lead.
Paraclete kept that one-point advantage until midway through the fourth quarter when Spirits punter Alan Adams faked a punt and handed to Stevens, who gained 34 yards on the play. A few plays later, Stevens ran three yards for the touchdown.
The Spirits (11-1) have won their last 11 games after losing the season opener.
Orange Lutheran ended 7-5.
