Oldest U.S. Military Veteran Dies at 109

LEBANON, Pa. — The nation’s oldest military veteran, a 109-year-old man who had fought in the Spanish-American War and saw duty in the Boxer Rebellion in China, died today, officials said.
Walter Pleate, who enlisted in the Army on Feb. 24, 1899, died at the Veterans Administration Medical Center here. The oldest living veteran now is 107-year-old Christian Steinle of California, according to a VA spokesman, R. W. Mengel.
