Negotiators for seven supermarket chains in Southern California held a second day of meetings with striking Teamsters and also resumed stalled negotiations with meat cutters. Talks with Teamsters were renewed after the markets made their first major new contract offer since the beginning of the month-old strike and lockout, which has idled 22,000 Teamsters and meat cutters. However, spokesmen for both the Teamsters and the markets said little progress was made in the new session. The markets have been seeking a contract that would set lower wages for new hires, while generally preserving wage levels for current employees.
