A federal judge in Reno was asked by attorneys for U.S. Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-Nev.) to help stop leaks to the press of Laxalt’s deposition and other materials in the senator’s $250-million libel suit against the McClatchey Newspapers for publishing a story that said the Internal Revenue Service had evidence of skimming at a Carson City casino while the Laxalt family owned it. Laxalt’s attorney’s also asked representatives of the California-based newspaper group to say whether they were responsible for the leaks to other news organizations. The senator’s lawyers said advance publicity has made a fair trial difficult.
