College Basketball Roundup : Stanford Romps to a Record Win
Freshman Todd Lichti scored 23 points to lead Stanford to a record-setting 129-108 victory over Yale in a first-round game of the Apple Invitational basketball tournament Friday night at Stanford.
Stanford’s total broke the old school record of 115 points set in 1983 against Hawaii Pacific. The total also established a Maples Pavilion record, topping the 120 points UCLA scored against Stanford in 1976.
The 237 points by both teams broke the Maples Pavilion record of 206.
Stanford took a 70-52 lead at halftime, paced by 26-of-35 shooting from the free throw line. Freshman center Howard Wright, who had 18 points, sank 10 of 11 free throws.
Seven Stanford players scored in double figures, including Greg Butler with 19. Reserve guard Ken Wheeler led Yale with 22 points.
The Cardinal (3-0) led the Elis (2-2) all the way, including a 22-point lead of 92-70 midway through the second half.
Arkansas State 66, Iowa 62--John Tate scored 23 points, and Brad Goshien added 21 as Arkansas State (4-0) upset the previously unbeaten Hawkeyes (5-1) in the Amana-Hawkeye tournament at Iowa City, Iowa.
It was Iowa’s first loss in the four-year history of the tournament.
Freshman Roy Marble led Iowa with 15 points, and Al Lorenzen scored 14. The Hawkeyes shot only 41% from the field.
In today’s final, Arkansas State State will meet Alabama Birmingham (4-1), which scored a 71-61 victory over Lehigh (2-3). Jerome Mincy led UAB with 14 points.
Syracuse 97, LaSalle 72--Rafael Addison scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the Orangemen (4-0) in the Carrier tournament at Syracuse, N.Y. Larry Koretz had 19 points for LaSalle (3-2).
In the other game, Vernon Butler scored 29 points, including nine straight in the second half, to lead Navy to a 73-62 win over Ohio University. David Robinson had 12 points and 16 rebounds for Navy.
Georgetown 77, Grambling 30--The Hoyas jumped out to a 22-2 lead and were never threatened in the mismatch at Monroe, La. Both teams were 3-0 going into the game. Reggie Williams had 11 points for Georgetown.
St. John’s 80, Columbia 58--Walter Berry scored 29 points, hitting 13 of 15 shots, and Ron Rowan added 18 points (9 of 11) to lead the Redmen (5-1) in the Joe Lapchick tournament at New York. Tom Gwydir had 19 points for Columbia (3-1).
In the other game, Jaime Latney scored 20 points to lead Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2) to an 82-55 win over Hofstra (3-2).
Auburn 80, Kentucky Wesleyan 71--Chuck Person scored 30 points for the Tigers (4-1) in the Hilltopper tournament at Bowling Green, Ky. Dave Bennett had 26 points for Kentucky Wesleyan (4-1), ranked No. 3 in Division II.
In the other game, Tellis Frank and Kannard Johnson each scored 22 points to lead Western Kentucky (4-0) to a 101-75 rout of Chaminade (3-4).
Illinois 79, Eastern Kentucky 56--The Illini (4-1) jumped to an 18-4 lead in winning their 27th straight home game in the Illini tournament. Efrem Winters had 10 points for Illinois. Eastern Kentucky (2-2) was led by Antonio Parris with 24 points.
Illinois will face Utah State (3-1), which scored a 75-74 win over Murray State (3-1) as Greg Grant scored 20 points and Jon Judkins hit two key free throws in the stretch.
Arizona State 63, Fordham 60--Tarre Isiah scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half to lead the Sun Devils (4-0) past the Rams (3-2) in the Kactus Klassic at Tempe, Ariz.
In the other game, Carl Lott and Jamie Dixon each scored 19 points to lead unbeaten TCU to a 63-50 victory over winless BYU.
UC Santa Barbara 73, Washington State 70--Scott Fisher came off the bench to score 23 points, including 15 in the second half, as the Gauchos (3-2) scored their nonconference victory over the Cougasr (4-2) at Goleta, Calif.
