College Basketball Roundup : UTEP Upsets Georgetown, 78-64

Quintan Gates scored 12 of his 18 points after halftime and Texas El Paso stunned fifth-ranked Georgetown, 78-64, Friday night at El Paso, Tex.

The Miners (9-1) handed the Hoyas (9-1) their defeat outside the Big East Conference and NCAA playoffs since Dec. 10, 1983, when Georgetown was beaten by DePaul, 63-61. It was the Hoyas’ first loss in 39 games against team outside the Big East.

It was Georgetown’s worst loss since a 94-73 setback to Alabama in 1982.

UTEP broke open a close game in the second half with six straight points--two free throws by Jeep Jackson and baskets by Lem Clanton and Gates--that gave the Miners a 57-47 lead.

TOURNAMENTS All-College

Oklahoma 78, Cincinnati 65--Darryl Kennedy and Tim McCalister each scored 19 points to lead the eighth-ranked Sooners past the Bearcats in the 50th annual All College Tournament at Oklahoma City.

In the first game, Kevin Lewis scored 27 points and Terry Willias added 20 to lift SMU to a 78-71 win over Oklahoma State. Terry Faggins had 22 points for the Cowboys (6-4).

Oklahoma (10-0) plays the Mustangs (8-1) in the title game tonight.

Cable Car

Purdue 67, Lamar 56--Guard Troy Lewis scored 16 points and the Boilermakers knocked off the Cardinals in the Cable Car Classic at Santa Clara.

The Boilermakers (10-2) plays the winner of the Santa Clara and Northern Arizona for the championship today.

James Gulley hit a shot to pull Lamar (6-3) even at halftime, 28-28, but Lewis hit the first shot of the second half and the Cardinals (6-3) never caught up.

Cotton States

Georgia Tech 90, Texas 55--John Salley hit 8 of 9 shots from the field as the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets held John Brownlee to 12 points and stopped the Longhorns in the Cotton States tournament at Atlanta.

Salley and Duane Ferrell scored 17 points each to lead Tech (8-1) into tonight’s final against Navy.

Navy 67, DePaul 64--Vernon Butler scored 10 of his 23 points in the final 6:23 and the Midshipmen overcame a 13-point deficit and hand DePaul its third straight loss.

DePaul (6-3) led, 40-30, at halftime and built that lead to 56-43 with 9:11 left when Terrence Greene hit two free throws. Navy (7-2) tied the score, 62-62, with 1:59 left on a layup by Butler. The Midshipmen went ahead for good, 64-62, with 37 seconds left in the game on two free throws by Butler.

Orange Bowl

North Carolina 129, Manhattan 45--Reserves Ranzino Smith and Kevin Madden scored 17 points each as the top-ranked Tar Heels devastated the Jaspers in the Orange Bowl Tournament at Miami.

The 129 points broke the school record of 128 set in 1972 against Dartmouth. The victory margin of 84 points topped the previous best of 69 in a 89-20 thrashing of Davidson in 1945.

The talented Tar Heels (11-0) play Brown, a 62-61 victor over Miami, in tonight’s championship game.

Fiesta Bowl

Arizona 54, Princeton 41--Steve Kerr scored 16 points and freshman Sean Elliott added 15 as the Wildcats turned back the Tigers in the first round of the Fiesta Bowl tournament at Tucson, Ariz.

The Wildcats (6-4) advanced to tonight’s championship game against Boston College (8-1), which beat Wisconsin, 74-72, in an earlier game Friday night.

Mike Harnum scored 22 points for Princeton (2-3).

Hoosier

Indiana 87, Idaho 57--Freshman forward Rick Calloway scored 26 points and Steve Alford added 24 and the 16th-ranked Hoosiers trounced the Vandals in the Hoosier Classic at Indianapolis.

Indiana (7-2) will meet Mississippi State, a 75-65 winner over San Jose State, in tonight’s championship game.

The Hoosiers led, 37-33, at halftime but went on a 22-2 run in the second half to blow the Vandals out of the game. Alford hit 9 of 12 shots from the field in the second half.

Chris Carey scored 12 for the Vandals (4-5).

Kansas City BMA

Kansas 81, Louisiana Tech 59--Danny Manning scored in 20 points, leading sixth-ranked Jayhawks to their eighth straight victory with a rout of the Bulldogs at in the BMA Holiday tournament at Kansas City.

The Jayhawks (11-1) meet Wichita State, which beat Arizona State, 74-59, tonight for the championship.

Willie Baland scored 14 points for Tech (5-3).

Las Vegas Holiday

Alabama Birmingham 69, TCU 62--James Ponder sank five three throws in the final minute and the 14th-ranked Blazers held off the Horned Frogs in Holiday tournament at Las Vegas.

No. 12 Nevada Las Vegas played Ball State in the second game to see who will face the Blazers (12-1) in tonight’s title game.

Rainbow

Washington State 74, Wake Forest 71--Keith Morrison scored 22 points and Chris Winkler came off the bench for 13 in the second half and the Huskies edged the Demon Deacons in the Rainbow Classic at Honolulu.

Joe Wallace added 19 points for the Cougars (6-5). Charlie Thomas and Mark Cline had 12 each for Wake Forest (5-6).

Sugar Bowl

SW Louisiana 79, Tennessee 76--Randal Smith hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left in the second overtime period to clinch an upset victory for the Rajun Cajuns over the Volunteers in the Sugar Bowl tournament at New Orleans.
