Marine Collapses During Fitness Test, Dies
A 20-year-old Marine recruit collapsed Saturday during a physical fitness test at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and died about an hour later at the Navy Hospital in Balboa Park.
Pvt. Brett D. Buddenberg was on the final lap of the “intermediate physical fitness test,” which consists of a series of sit-ups, pull-ups and a three-mile run, when he collapsed about 2:05 p.m., said Lt. L.B. Pratt, a spokeswoman for the MCRD.
Marines administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene, and Buddenberg was taken to the Navy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:33 p.m.
An autopsy will be performed today on the Iowa man. Preliminary cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest.
